A new library for Wolvercote Primary School

For years Wolvercote Primary School’s library has been squeezed into an awkward, noisy space between a corridor and the head teacher’s office. Though it offers a good selection of books, there isn’t much scope for displaying them. There is hardly anywhere for children to sit down and look at books they might like to borrow, and only a few can use the library at any one time.

This is all about to change because the library is being moved to a fantastic new space in the oldest part of the school, a classroom that has previously been used for After School Club and as a computer room. A long time ago it was the school swimming pool! It has a high ceiling, big mullioned windows with a view of trees, and lots of natural light.

The move will make the library a far more inviting and peaceful place for children to explore and read books. There will be more space to shelve and display fiction and non-fiction titles; new sections for graphic novels and poetry books; rugs and comfortable seating; and a modular table where teachers and small groups of children will talk about books.

During 2023 the school’s Parent Teacher Association has been raising funds for this project, which will cost about £8,000. The money will cover the cost of new flooring and some new furniture (though the existing library shelves will be re-used); redecorating the walls and painting a beautiful tree mural; and buying new books which have been requested by teachers and pupils. A planned audio book section will offer an alternative way of enjoying books.

Parents and carers are also giving their time and skills to the project. One is providing her expertise as an interior designer, two are volunteering as librarians, and a team of people will be packing and moving books as the new library takes shape.
